曹操与蔡文姬生活在同一个时代，两位名人之间又有许多瓜葛，因此，二人历来是人们关注的一个热点。有人认为，曹操在霸业即成的时候，不惜金璧玉帛将蔡文姬赎回，二人之间一定存在着难以忘怀的情感；也有人认为，曹操重情义，赎回文姬是对与有“管鲍之交”的老友蔡邕负责任；也有人说，曹操雄才大略，是为繁荣他的“王国”的文化事业才赎回文姬的。文化大师郭沫若先生则认为：“从蔡文姬的一生可以看出曹操的伟大。她是曹操把她拯救了的。他之所以赎回文姬，……并不是纯粹地出于私人感情。”本书从人们所关心的一些问题出发，以基本史实为依据，试图解开这个谜团。
